I wasn’t crazy about it. It was Kubrick’s most conventional film by a long shot and while it is impressive for a directorial debut, I just wasn’t feeling the suspense or the thrill. It was a little cut and dry and I think the first act dragged a little bit.
The composition of the film itself was fine, I just wasn’t really hooked into it. It picked up towards the end once the heist got off the ground but even so, I wasn’t exactly thrilled.
The ending was really contrived and cheesy as well. It was all just a little circumstantial and ridiculous for my taste. Although having said that, the fight scene in the bar that involved an airplane spin and a hammerlock was hilarious for all the wrong reasons.
It wasn’t a bad movie I just thought it was decidedly average and I wanted Kubrick to do something more unique with the idea of the atypical heist movie. Having said that I watched it out of context. For a movie from 1956 it was probably quite an impressive fast-paced little thriller.
Not bad, just average and I don’t really feel it held up.
